The City of Eagle Pass, Texas is scheduled to have an election to fill its Mayor and two City Council places on Saturday, May 3, 2025, according to the City’s website. Specifically, the Mayor’s position and City Council Places 2 and 4 will be on the May 3rd ballot.
Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas, Jr. announced in December 2024 that he was not seeking re-election for a second four year term due to personal and family reasons, opening a flurry of candidates for Mayor and City Council.
The first to announce their intention to seek the position of Mayor were City Councilwoman Place 4 Monica J. Cruz in December 2024 followed closely by Maverick County Hospital District Board of Directors President Aaron E. Valdez as well. One or more additional individuals have expressed interest in the possibility of running for Mayor of Eagle Pass, but are currently consulting with their families and friends before throwing their hat in the ring. Local Certified Public Accountant and former Maverick County Tax Assessor-Collector, Jesus Casas, is studying the possibility of running for Mayor, too. The Mayor’s race is going to be wide open and highly competitive with multiple individuals offering their leadership experience to lead the border city into the next economic development growth phase.
Both Cruz and Valdez have already posted on social media their intent to run for Mayor, have issued press releases to local news media, and posted campaign signs on the streets of Eagle Pass.
City Councilman Place 2 Elias Diaz announced his intent to seek re-election to a second term of four years in the May 3rd election. Another citizen, Jorge Sierra, is contemplating running for City Council Place 2 against Diaz, but has not formally announced yet. One or more individuals are reviewing whether to seek City Council Place 2, as well.
With City Councilwoman’s Cruz running for Mayor, City Council Place 4 will also be on the ballot with local attorney Alberto Rodriguez being the first candidate to announce his intent to seek Place 4 in the May 3rd election. At least two other individuals have expressed interest in seeking City Council Place 4, but have not made their announcements public yet.
All three Eagle Pass City Council places are open to any individuals who are a resident of Eagle Pass, a United States citizen, are 18 years or older, and meet other requirements from the state election code.
