Captain Amy Gonzalez Appointed Interim Eagle Pass Chief of Police

Eagle Pass City Manager Homero Balderas announced on Saturday, December 28, 2024 the appointment of Captain Amy Gonzalez as the Interim Eagle Pass Chief of Police effective January 1, 2025 following the resignation of former Chief of Police Federico “Fred” Garza on December 5, 2024.
Balderas stated “the selection process for appointing an Interim Chief of Police among several strong qualified candidates within the Eagle Pass Police Department was rigorous and challenging. The decision was challenging as several highly qualified individuals were considered. However, Captain Gonzalez has consistently demonstrated the leadership attributes we seek in this position. She has earned the trust and respect of her peers and the community.”
Balderas added that “Captain Gonzalez will oversee the Department’s operations and ensure continuity of service while the search for a permanent Chief of Police continues. Her appointment underscores the City of Eagle Pass’s commitment to maintaining public safety and fostering community trust.”
Captain Gonzalez is a 25 year veteran of the Eagle Pass Police Department. “She has distinguished herself with distinction and brings decades of experience, dedication, and leadership to the role,” Balderas said.
Captain Gonzalez appointment as Interim Eagle Pass Chief of Police sets a historical precedent in that she is the first woman to appointed or named as Interim Chief of Police of the City of Eagle Pass Police Department.
Captain Gonzalez has risen through the ranks of the Eagle Pass Police Department in her 25 years of experience, including serving as a patrol officer, K-9 officer, administration, and mentor of young officers and police academy cadets.
Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas, Jr. stated “We congratulate Ms. Gonzalez on her selection and have full confidence in her ability to lead the Department successfully.” Salinas added “her extensive experience and leadership skills make her an excellent choice to guide our Police Department during this important transition.”
Captain Gonzalez thanked City Manager Homero Balderas for his appointment of her as Interim Eagle Pass Chief of Police and looks forward to working with the officers within the Police Department in providing public safety and making security a priority within the community, as well as working with all county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the region.
Balderas noted the City of Eagle Pass has already commenced a search process for the selection of a permanent Eagle Pass Police Chief with the City Human Resources Director, Cynthia Campos. The Eagle Pass Police Department Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager with confirmation by the City Council.
