The 2024 Texas High School Football season kicks-off on Friday, August 30, 2024 with both the Eagle Pass High School Eagles and Winn High School Mavericks playing against each other in the 18th Rivalry Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas amid an expected sold-out stadium. The teams were unable to play against each other in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Former Eagle Pass ISD Athletics Director Eddie Graff retired this summer and former Winn Mavericks Head Football Coach and Campus Athletics Director Eric Villasenor was named the new EPISD Athletics Director by the EPISD Board of Trustees.
Both the Eagles and Mavericks start the 2024 football season with new Head Football Coaches as former Eagles Defensive Coordinator Roger Olivas was tapped to become the new Eagles Head Football Coach and former Mavericks Defensive Co-Coordinator Rene Ramirez was selected as the Mavericks Head Football Coach by the Eagle Pass ISD Board of Trustees to lead the two programs.
The annual Rivalry Meeting between the Eagles and Mavericks is the most anticipated and exciting football game for loyal Eagle Nation and Maverick Nation aficionados, student-athletes, student bodies, cheer teams, dance teams, marching bands, and parents. The game brings the two schools as one community. The winner earns bragging rights for one year until the next Rivalry meeting the following year.
The Eagles will be the home team this year while the Mavericks will be the visiting team. Eagle Nation fans will seat on the home-press box side of Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium and the Mavericks on the visitor’s side.
The Eagles will seek to remain undefeated in the Rivalry Meeting series as they have previously won all 17 meetings while the Mavericks are looking to break the streak and earn their first Rivalry Meeting.
The Eagles are competing once again in District 30-6A after University Interscholastic League realignment in February 2024 while the Mavericks remained in their previous District 14-5A, Division I.
The Eagles scrimmaged the San Antonio Marshall High School Rams last week in San Antonio, Texas and did well coming out on top 42-14 while the Mavericks scrimmaged the Carrizo Springs High School Wildcats and won 14-7. Both teams have one remaining scrimmage today (Thursday, August 22nd) before the start of the regular season next week.
The Eagles are scheduled to scrimmage the Laredo Martin High School Tigers on August 22nd at 7 p.m. at the Laredo Independent School District Shirley Field while the Mavericks are scrimmaging the Laredo LBJ High School Wolves at 7 p.m. at the Laredo United Independent School District Student Activity Complex.
After the final scrimmage, both the Eagles and Mavericks brain trust will evaluate each position on offense, defense, and special teams to determine which players will be starting next week for the 18th Rivalry Meeting. The Eagles have approximately 72 players on the roster while the Mavericks have approximately 42 players on their roster.
The entire community of Eagle Pass and Maverick County are cordially invited to attend the 18th Rivalry Football Meeting between the Eagles and Mavericks on Friday, August 30th, in Eagle Pass, Texas. Tickets may be purchased at the EPISD Athletics Department Office, located at the EPISD Student Activity Center Office.
