Southwest Texas College at Eagle Pass Hosts “Jump Into Success Summer Camp” for Junior High Students
(Press Release)—Eagle Pass, Texas. Southwest Texas College at Eagle Pass’ Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society members hosted the “Jump Into Success Summer Camp” this past June 2024 for students entering 7th and 8th grades. The camp provided hands-on activities for exploring future career paths, and both sessions were a tremendous success, announced Brenda Hoffman, Vice-President at Southwest Texas College at Eagle Pass.
The weeklong summer camp featured a career cluster presentation on the first day with the guidance of the PTK members, showcasing their creativity and public speaking skills. During the second day, students built a Lego automobile and made a stop-motion animation film, enjoying the challenge of following instructions and using their creativity. This activity was a great success thanks to the assistance of Areli Fisher, Luis M. Perez, and Brandon Gurwell.
During the third day of camp, students learned about the exciting careers available in health sciences, including learned how to perform CPR, aid people choking, treat burn wounds, and created personalized essential oils to emphasize the importance of mental health. On the fourth day, participants learned about and experienced the technical career programs available at the college. Students drove a truck driving simulator, learned about equipment for power line and electrical technicians, and practiced drawing blood and reading blood pressure levels. The Workforce Education Department at the college provided the instruction for these technical career programs.
On the final day of the camp, students enjoyed receiving recognition for completing the weeklong summer camp with a certificate of completion, and competed for their own “Oscars” awards for best sound effects, movies, editing, and many more. The students wrapped up their weeklong activities with fun and competitive water games in the sun.
Special thanks to the PTK members for their extraordinary dedication and support of the students and the “Jump Into Success Summer Camp Program.” Also a special thanks to local corporate sponsors such as Border Federal Credit Union, Southwest Border AHEC, Walmart, Stitch N Print, Chick-Fil-A, Camino Real Community Services and SWTX Workforce Education for their invaluable support.
PTK Advisors Dorylee Baez-Nieves and Brittney Martinez led the successful “Jump Into Success Summer Camp” and did an outstanding job teaching the junior high students.
