Eagle Pass Independent School District Superintendent Samuel Mijares announced that Roger Olivas has been named the new Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator for the Eagle Pass High School Eagles following the retirement of former Head Coach Tom Gonzalez in May 2024.
Olivas served as the Eagles Defensive Coordinator since 2006 and has been an assistant coach with the Eagles since 1999. Olivas is highly regarded and respected among Texas high school coaches and in the community. He is best known for being the architect of the daunted Eagles Football “Land Shark” Defense, earning six annual awards for coaching his team among the top 10 defensive units in Texas with the fewest points allowed.
Coach Olivas garnered with the Eagles Football Program a total of three District Championships, six Big-District Championships, and 17 state football playoff appearances during his tenure as an Assistant Coach with the Eagles. He is a natural selection for the vacant position of Eagles Football Head Coach job. He is highly competitive, but is known for his outstanding character and integrity within the Texas high school coaching profession.
Olivas is also known for being the Eagles Head Coach for Track and Field since 2006, garnering eight District Championships, qualifying 11 athletes to the State Track and Field Meet, and obtained the prestigious Texas High School Coaches Association 500 point milestone in 2023. He began as an Eagles Assistant Coach for Track and Field in 2000. He has received the District Track and Field Coach of the Year Award on eight occasions.
Olivas is a graduate of Eagle Pass High School in 1987. Burnt orange and white runs through his veins. He was a standout Eagles football player himself. He has a passion for athletics and developing young men and women into productive citizens in society.
His coaching career started shortly after high school when he volunteered to coach the Eagle Pass Youth Striders Track and Field Team during the summers. He developed and trained many athletes who qualified for the national track and field meet. His love for coaching propelled him to volunteer for the new Memorial Junior High Mavericks Football Team, 7th grade team. After two years as a volunteer coach at Memorial Junior High, he was rewarded with a paid coaching job. He signed on with the Eagles Football Program in 1999 as an Assistant Coach with Defensive Backs and later as the Special Teams Coordinator during 2001 to 2005.
Olivas is married to his high school sweetheart, Claudia Perez, and they have four children: Trey, Sarah, Amanda, and Bo. He is the son of Rogelio and Dolores Olivas of Eagle Pass, Texas.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to have been named Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator for Eagle Pass High School. I look forward to developing the famed Eagles football program to new heights and nurturing successful young men and women in the community into becoming outstanding and productive citizens in society,” said Olivas.
Olivas is anxious to starting the new Texas high school football season in 2024 under the helm of the mighty Eagles football program. Go Eagles Baby!
