Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barcena Ibarra to Visit Eagle Pass, Texas on April 20, 2024

Mexico’s top diplomat, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Barcena Ibarra, is scheduled to visit Eagle Pass, Texas during Saturday, April 20, 2024, as part of her week-long trip to the border of the State of Texas from April 17-20, 2024 to reaffirm Mexico’s commitment to providing timely and dignified consular assistance and protection to all Mexicans in Texas.
Secretary Barcena visited Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas during April 17-18, 2024. In Ciudad Juarez, Secretary Barcena visited the Leonia Vicario Migrant Integration Center and met with Bienestar (Wellbeing) Secretary Ariadna Montiel Reyes to analyze the management and financing of these migrant centers.
In Ciudad Juarez, Secretary Barcena also met with the Mexican section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) and Commissioner Adriana Resendez Maldonado and staff to discuss the Commission’s activities on the border.
In El Paso, Texas, Secretary Barcena visited the Consul of Mexico and with strategic partners, civil society organizations and community leaders to explain Mexico’s position on Texas SB 4.
Also in El Paso, Secretary Barcena visited with El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego and Estrella Escobar, Senior Chief of Staff to El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser, as well as with business executives to discuss the growing trade relationship between Mexico and Texas, the economic outlook for the region and bilateral trade.
On Friday, April 19, Secretary visited San Antonio, Texas and met with the Consul of Mexico at San Antonio as well as with 11 Mexican Consuls in Texas, local community leaders and business executives to discuss Mexico’s strategy to counter legislation that criminalizes migrants.
In Laredo, Texas, Secretary Barcena will visit the Nuevo Laredo III and World Trade International Bridges to discuss the commercial trade and traffic with local authorities and Tamaulipas Governor Americo Villarreal Anaya. Secretary Barcena also will meet with Mexican nationals living in Laredo to discuss their needs and resources available to them.
In Eagle Pass, Texas, Secretary Barcena on Saturday, April 20, 2024 will meet with community leaders at the Mexican Consulate and with federal and local authorities and Border Patrol representatives at a private reception by invitation only to discuss the current state of affairs concerning migrants and immigration issues.
