Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber Announces Bid for Re-Election
(Press Release) Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced to the Eagle Pass Business Journal that he is seeking re-election to another four year term in the November 5, 2024 General Election with Early Voting commencing on Monday, October 21, 2024 through Friday, November 1, 2024 at the Eagle Pass Multi-Purpose Center, 480 S. Adams Street, in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Early voting during October 28 through November 1, 2024 at the Multi-Purpose Center is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Regular Election Day is on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Maverick County Precinct designated polling sites.
Schmerber stated the heightened security issues affecting Eagle Pass and Maverick County, particularly the migrant crisis on the southern United States border, caused him to seek re-election for another term as Maverick County citizens require a law enforcement officer with diverse experience to lead the community’s security and protection.
Schmerber, a former United States Border Patrol officer and retired public school teacher, has been at the helm of the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department since 2012 when he successfully defeated incumbent Sheriff ‘Tom Herrera for the position, which he has held until now. He enjoys an excellent relationship with all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as with Mexican law enforcement authorities.
Schmerber’s diverse experience and recognized leadership and integrity within law enforcement agencies has assisted and continues to assist Maverick County citizens enjoy a peaceful and tranquil community and outstanding quality of life on the U. S.-Mexico border.
Schmerber is known for having an open door policy and being highly accessible to all residents of Maverick County as well as all law enforcement agencies. He has developed and implemented innovative law enforcement programs during his tenure, championing the people of Maverick County while protecting them from security threats.
Schmerber was re-elected in 2016 and 2020 and now seeks another four year term in the Democratic Party Primary election of March 5, 2024 and eventually in the November 5, 2024 general election.
Schmerber is a native Maverick Countian and graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1971. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas. He is the son of Santiago Schmerber and Martina Garay Schmerber of Eagle Pass. His roots run deep in Maverick County.
