Winn Mavericks Battle Eagle Pass Eagles in 17th Rivalry Meeting in 2023 Season Opener

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks will host their cross-town rival, Eagle Pass High School Eagles, in both teams’ 2023 Texas high school football season opener in the 17th Rivalry Meeting between the two Eagle Pass teams on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 7:00 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The 17th Rivalry Meeting between the Winn Mavericks and Eagle Pass Eagles is the most highly anticipated football game in Eagle Pass as both local teams will battle for local supremacy and bragging rights in the highest attended game of the season with an expected crowd of 8,500 loyal football fans cheering for both teams.
The Mavericks are the home team this year while the Eagles will be the visiting team. Maverick Nation fans will seat in the home section of venerable Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium while the Eagle Nation aficionados will be on the visitors side.
The Mavericks enter the storied 17th Rivalry game seeking to earn their first victory over the the Eagle Pass Eagles in the series while the Eagles will seek to remain undefeated against the Mavericks. Both teams are expected to provide a highly competitive game with great sportsmanship.
The District 13-5A, Division I Mavericks have 26 returning lettermen, including five on offense and five on defense. The Mavericks have two senior quarterbacks to guide their offense in the 2023 season, Gabriel Balderas and Asdrubal Ruiz, and running backs, Luis Flores and Tadeo Rivera. The Mavericks offensive line will be anchored by Greg Salazar, Mario Lopez, Aldo Diaz, and Gabriel Gutierrez. Wide receivers include Sebastian Vasquez, Estevan Hoffman, Luis Leos, Juan Gonzalez, Francisco Ramirez, Allen Alonso, and Tight End Humberto Munoz and Emmanuel Reyes.
On defense, the Mavericks are lead by linebackers Jaime Barrientos, Marco Gonzalez, and Emanuel Reyes, defensive ends Xavier Rios, Henry Gonzalez, Andres Rodriguez, Abelardo Olveda, Jose Luis Aguilar, and Humberto Munoz, and defensive backs Robert Avila, Estevan Hoffman, Allen Alonso, Francisco Gonzalez, Ruben Ruiz, Juan Sanchez, and Luis Leos.
The District 30-6A Eagles have 26 returning lettermen, including five on offense and five on defense. The Eagles offense is lead by quarterback Andres Garcia, running back Eddie Valadez, wide receivers Wilfredo Frausto, Sebastian Diaz, and Jose Hernandez, and offensive linemen Armando Moyeda and Jose Rendon.
On defense, the Eagles are lead by defensive end Gunnar Caballero and Rae De Alba, defensive tackle Izhar Mauricio, linebackers Diego Villarreal, Devonte Monsivais, and Tristan Gonzalez, and defensive backs Armando Lechler, Danny Martinez, and Walker Finlayson.
All Maverick and Eagle Nations’ aficionados are invited to attend this great rivalry meeting between the two Eagle Pass football teams.
Both the thundering Maverick Marching Band and mighty Eagle Marching Band are ready for another football and marching season. The Mavericks and Eagles Cheer squads as well as the Silverline and Diamond Dance teams will provide spirit and entertainment for the football fans.
Local football aficionados affectionately refer to this great rivalry series as “The Menudo Bowl” while others like to call it the mythical City Championship. The teams prefer to call it a rivalry. One thing is certain: the game will be exciting and entertaining. Come on out and cheer for both teams and support the youth of our community.
