Eagle Pass Citizens to Host Rio Grande Memorial Vigil in Honor of All Persons Who Have Died in the Rio Grande
(Press Release) Eagle Pass, Texas. The Eagle Pass Border Coalition is hosting a solemn candlelight Rio Grande Memorial Vigil on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the City of Eagle Pass-owned Shelby Park to honor and remember all persons who have died in the Rio Grande River, featuring keynote speakers, clergy, music, and the release of flowers into the Rio Grande in memory of those people who passed away in the Rio Grande.
The Rio Grande is a beautiful river that connects two nations, but it is also a deadly trap for many migrants who risk their lives to cross it. We mourn the loss of every life that has been claimed by the river, and we call for more humane and compassionate policies that respect the dignity and rights of all people. The public is invited to attend this candlelight vigil to remember all who lost their lives in the Rio Grande.
Admission to the public event is free. Attendees are encouraged to wear white and bring white flowers to be released into the Rio Grande in memory of all who perished in the Rio Grande.
Local citizens will participate in the Rio Grande Memorial Vigil as well as sing and play music at the event. Bring your family, children, and friends to Shelby Park on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 7 p.m. Free parking is available and water will be provided to attendees to stay hydrated.
At the conclusion of the Vigil, participants will release flowers into the Rio Grande at the Shelby Park Boat Ramp in remembrance of all who perished in the Rio Grande.
During the first seven months of 2023, 76 persons have died in the Rio Grande at the Eagle Pass, Texas-Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico sector of the Rio Grande River.
