Congressman Joaquin Castro to Lead Congressional Delegation to Eagle Pass, Texas to Assess Impact of Operation Lone Star

(Press Release) Eagle Pass, Texas. On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Congressman Joaquin Castro of San Antonio, Texas will lead members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Texas Democratic delegation on a trip to Eagle Pass, Texas at the United States-Mexico border. The purpose of the trip will be for legislators to see the deadly razor concertina wire and buoys that Governor Abbott installed in the Rio Grande and engage with local authorities and community members about the impact of Operation Lone Star (OLS) on asylum-seekers, federal immigration enforcement, and the local community.
“Governor Abbott’s barbaric operations in Eagle Pass are intentionally designed to injure, maim, and kill migrants and rob them of their legal right to seek asylum in the United States,” said Congressman Joaquin Castro.
“On Tuesday, our delegation will see Abbott’s Rio Grande death traps for ourselves and hear from the people of Eagle Pass about the devastating and disruptive impact of Operation Lone Star on their lives and community,” added Castro.
The delegation will visit sections of the Rio Grande where floating marine buoys and razor sharp wire are creating hazards for asylum-seekers, speak with local migrant service providers, property owners, and community residents about their experience with Operation Lone Star, and receive briefings from U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The members will conclude their visit with a Press Conference at approximately 1:30 P.M. (CST) at the City of Eagle Pass International Center for Trade.
Among delegation members will include Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Congressman Tony Cardenas (CA-29), local elected officials and community stakeholders.
