Eagle Pass High School Class of 2020 Salutatorian Alyssa Nicole Barrientos, a senior at Boston College, was selected by United States Senator Elizabeth Warren to participate in her 2023 Summer Internship Program at her Boston, Massachusetts office as an Immigration Intern assisting constituents with diverse issues regarding their immigration matters.
Barrientos is one of nine college and university students among over 590 applicants selected by Senator Warren to participate in the prestigious summer internship program at her Boston office.
Barrientos is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Political Science and Sociology at Boston College and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. She is scheduled to graduate in May 2024 from Boston College, one of the premier colleges in the United States.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to have been selected to work with Senator Warren during the summer of 2023 at her Boston office assisting constituents from the state of Massachusetts with a variety of complex immigration issues,” Barrientos said. “The public policy internship is extremely gratifying and rewarding being able to assist constituents with their personal immigration issues and questions,” Barrientos added.
Barrientos noted her education in Eagle Pass and at Boston College has prepared her for a future career in law and public policy. She is studying this summer to take her LSAT test for law school admission in the Fall 2023. She plans to apply to law schools this Fall for enrollment next year.
Barrientos credits her beloved mother, Romelia Barrientos, and grandparents, Luciano and Esperanza Esquivel, of Eagle Pass for encouraging her to pursue her dreams and goals through an education, discipline, and perseverance. They have taught her to be passionate about her beliefs while maintaining self-esteem and humility.
Barrientos added her experience working at an Eagle Pass restaurant during high school and college allowed her to learn confidence, social interaction, and leadership skills. She also noted an internship with the Eagle Pass Business Journal and a local law firm in Eagle Pass during the summer of 2022 were invaluable in honing her interest in law and public policy issues. She added all of her past teachers and present professors have contributed to her intellectual curiosity and personal development.
Barrientos, however, stated working with Senator Warren and personally meeting her this summer has been the highlight of her education and young career. She hopes to develop and enhance her keen interest in law and public policy during her fascinating and rewarding internship with Senator Warren. She is extremely grateful for the opportunity Senator Warren has granted her to participate in the summer internship program, particularly to a young person from the United States-Mexico border like Eagle Pass, Texas.
