Eagle Pass and Maverick County Announce $7.25 Million New Hotel Development in Downtown Area, Third Project Within Three Months

The City of Eagle Pass City Council and Maverick County Commissioners Court jointly announced at a press conference held on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at City Council Chambers in City Hall the approval of Texas Local Government Code Chapter 380/381 Tax Abatement agreements with Eagle Pass Hospitality Group, LLC for the construction and development of a new $7.25 million 90 room dual Hawthorn/La Quinta hotel project to be located adjacent to the City Municipal Golf Course and historic Fort Duncan ruins in downtown Eagle Pass along the Rio Grande between the two City international bridges.
Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo stated this is the third new hotel development project granted tax abatement agreements jointly by Maverick County Commissioners Court and the City of Eagle Pass City Council within the past three months, spurring new economic development in the community.
Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas stated the new dual Hawthorn/La Quinta hotel project will feature 90 rooms, including 30 rooms of Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham and 60 rooms of Wingate by Wyndham, and will generate 31 new jobs in the community. The new Hawthorn/La Quinta hotel will also include a conference room, swimming pool, fitness and health center and be four stories tall with scenic views of Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico.
Eagle Pass Hospitality Group, LLC is owned by the Andres Oyervides Ramirez family of Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico and the new Hawthorn/La Quinta hotel will be the second hotel developed in Eagle Pass by this investment group, having built 10 years ago the Microtel Hotel located on El Indio Highway in Eagle Pass.
Mr. Andres Oyervides Ramirez stated the family is excited and proud to develop this new dual hotel project in downtown Eagle Pass and appreciates the support the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County have given their company to facilitate investing in this border community. Oyervides added that a restaurant is planned on the plaza of the four story hotel to provide a unique scenic dining experience unparalleled in Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras. He also noted that the hotel will be developed in about three acres of the five acre tract of property and a retail/office center is planned for the remaining acreage. He noted the new Hawthorn/La Quinta hotel project is scheduled to be completed by April of 2024.
City of Eagle Pass Economic Development Department Director Arturo Marquez and his staff have promoted an aggressive campaign of the use of the Texas Local Government Code Chapter 380 tax abatement incentives to recruit and attract new businesses to the community. Marquez advised the Eagle Pass City Council in the approval of the Chapter 380 tax abatement incentives package for Eagle Pass Hospitality Group, LLC.
Eagle Pass-Maverick County Economic Development Alliance Executive Director Judith A. Canales assisted Maverick County Commissioners Court with the approval of the Chapter 381 tax abatement agreement for this new dual hotel development project.
In addition to these three new hotel announcements within the past three months, the former Hesles Hotel on Madison Street in downtown Eagle Pass is currently undergoing renovation by a local investment group and should add new hotel rooms to the community in 2023.
Eagle Pass and Maverick County are currently experiencing a rapid growth spurt and are in the cusp of exponential economic development and population growth with the new United States Canada Mexico Trade Agreement scheduled to take effect in the immediate future and other social and economic developments happening on the U.S.-Mexico border such as the immigration surge.
Eagle Pass and Maverick County residents are requesting City and County officials to recruit major retail and food chain stores like Target, Costco, Sam’s Club, Albertson’s, Kroger, and an HEB Plus to the growing community, as well as new manufacturing and industries.
