Former Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu soundly defeated and upset incumbent Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo for the Democratic Party nomination in the Tuesday, March 1, 2022 Texas Primary Election, receiving 5,773 votes compared to Saucedo’s 3,668 votes.
In a campaign that was hotly contested and the political rhetoric escalated as Election Day approached, English Cantu out-organized and out-hustled Saucedo in political campaigning and persuading the most voters to cast their ballots for a change in Maverick County government after Saucedo’s 12 year reign as County Judge.
English Cantu jumped into a commanding lead after the Early Voting count, receiving 4,140 votes compared to Saucedo’s 2,694 votes-a 1,446 vote lead. Early Voting was held during February 14-25, 2022 at the Eagle Pass Multi-Purpose Center. Saucedo was unable to catch up with English Cantu’s huge Early Voting haul and lead during Election Day on Tuesday, March 1.
English Cantu increased his lead to 2,105 votes over Saucedo during Election Day at the end of the race as the total ballots cast were tallied by Election Judge Enriqueta Collett and her dedicated staff.
After the Early Voting results were announced in the evening, English Cantu jumped in elation and joy upon learning of his huge lead of 1,446 votes and thanked the Lord and his family and loyal campaign volunteers for supporting him during the hotly contested campaign race, inviting everyone to his political victory party at the Eagle Pass International Center for Trade as a celebration of change for the citizens of Maverick County.
Upon the final election results announcement, Saucedo gave a somber and humble concession speech to his loyal followers and congratulated English Cantu on his victory, wishing him well in the November 8, 2022 General Election against his Republican opponent, Armand Rosales. Saucedo thanked the citizens of Maverick County for allowing him to serve over 30 years in public service, including 12 years as County Judge when he steps down on January 1, 2023. Saucedo vowed to assist English Cantu with a smooth transition should he prevail in the November 8 General Election.
A total of 9,441 Maverick County voters cast ballots in the county judge’s race in the March 1 Democratic Party Primary Election out of a total of 33,590 registered voters.
