Two Men Killed and Another Seriously Injured in Auto Collision on U. S. Highway 277 South near Eagle Pass, Texas

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber reported two men were killed and another seriously injured in an auto collision on U. S. Highway 277 South about four miles east of Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at approximately 7:18 p.m.
The fatal collision involved a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup truck who was towing a trailer with another truck on it traveling east on U. S. Highway 277 South and a 2019 Chevrolet Pickup truck traveling westbound towards Eagle Pass. Preliminary investigation reports that the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup truck attempted to pass on the wrong side of the highway and colliding with the 2019 Chevrolet Pickup truck.
The deadly collision resulted in the deaths of the driver and passenger of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup truck towing a trailer with a vehicle, identified as Esteban Salas Lopez, age 73, of Katy, Texas and his passenger, Rodolfo Sanchez, age 66, of Houston, Texas. The driver of the 2019 Chevrolet Pickup truck was identified as Israel Olivares of Eagle Pass, Texas, who sustained serious injuries.
The Eagle Pass Fire Department EMS Ambulance, Rescue Vehicle, and Fire Engine were summoned to the accident scene just a few miles outside of the Eagle Pass Independent School District’s Student Activity Center on U. S. Highway 277 South.
Salas Lopez and Sanchez were pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident by a Maverick County Justice of the Peace while Olivares was transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center Emergency Room and later airlifted to a San Antonio, Texas medical center for treatment of serious injuries.
The fatal accident is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
