Eagle Passan Roberto “Robert” Cardona is participating in the National Football League’s Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the American Football Conference Champion Cincinnati Bengals.
Cardona is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cardona of Eagle Pass, Texas and a graduate of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Health Professions. He also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.
Prior to being selected as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Cincinnati Bengals, Cardona worked as an Athletic Trainer at Louisiana Tech University and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Cardona was selected by the Bengals among a pool of over 100 candidates, fulfilling his dream to become an Athletic Trainer in the NFL.
The Cincinnati Bengals upset Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at Kansas City on January 30, 2022 to win the American Football Conference Championship as Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson kicked the winning field goal after an interception by the Bengals defense, earning the hard fought game by a close score of 27-24.
Cardona recalled standing on the 50 yard line of the Bengals sideline intensely watching McPherson’s field goal kick sail through the uprights and jumping in joy and jubilation in celebration of the historic victory over the Chiefs, garnering a berth in Super Bowl LVI against the National Football Conference Champion Los Angeles Rams.
Elated by the win and celebration, Cardona called from the field his mother in Eagle Pass to to thank her and his dad for their love and support of his career as an Athletic Trainer and wanting to share the moment with them as the the celebration ensued on the field.
Cardona stated going to the Super Bowl is a lifelong dream come true and is busy mending and rehabilitating the injuries of Bengals’ players in preparation for the Super Bowl. He noted the work of an NFL Assistant Athletic Trainer is grueling with 12-14 hour days of work, usually from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. or sometimes longer.
Cardona would become the first Eagle Passan to win a Super Bowl ring if the Cincinnati Bengals defeat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. His career dream is to win a Super Bowl Championship ring with the Bengals.
Many Eagle Passans, family members, and friends are supporting Cardona and the Bengals to upset the hometown Los Angeles Rams to clinch the Super Bowl LVI Championship on Sunday, February 13. Go Bengals!
