Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Fall to San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans

Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Fall to San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans in District 14-5A, Division 1 Football Championship game 33-14 on Friday, December 4, 2020 in Eagle Pass, Texas, finishing the 2020 COVID-19 stricken regular season with a 4-2 record.
Despite the hard fought loss, the Mavericks have qualified for the Texas UIL 5A post-season playoffs next week against an opponent, date, site, and time to be announced.
In the first half, the Mavericks and Titans were locked up in a defensive battle with the Titans taking a narrow 12-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Titans engineered a 61 yard touchdown drive on their first possession culminating on a two yard scamper and the PAT was good to extend their lead 19-0
The Mavericks tallied their first points on the scoreboard on a 60 yard touchdown drive in the third quarter on a perfect 40 yard aerial strike from standout quarterback Jose Padilla to wide receiver Joe Garza and the extra point was perfect to narrow the score 19-7.
On the ensuing possession, the Titans answered the Mavericks score with a touchdown drive capped by a six yard pass from quarterback Cesar Tovar to wide receiver Homer Flores and the PAT was good to extend their lead 26-7 in the fourth quarter.
The never say die Mavericks responded with an impressive 58 yard touchdown drive highlighted by a 27 yard aerial bomb from quarterback Jose Padilla to wide receiver Mario Olivo and place kicker Emanuel Oviedo PAT sailed through the goal posts to narrow the score 26-14 in the fourth quarter.
The Titans added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a two yard plunge by wide receiver Jake Casares and the extra point was good to close out the score at 33-14.
The Mavericks played courageously and battled to the end, but it was not meant to be on this evening. The Mavericks gained valuable experience to prepare them for the postseason playoffs.
