Judge David Newell Seeks Re-Election to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 9
Judge David Newell currently serves as a Judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 9 having been elected in 2014. He is seeking re-election in the November 3rd general election. The Court of Criminal Appeals is a statewide appellate court that handles only criminal appeals. Judge Newell has over twenty years of experience handling criminal appeals as both a lawyer and a judge, making him the best qualified candidate for the position.
Son of a Navy dad, David was born in the Bethesda Naval Hospital, but grew up in Sugar Land, just outside of Texas. He went to law school after volunteering at the Houston Area Women’s Center made him realize that he could be of better service to people by becoming a prosecutor. After law school, he returned home to work in the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office. As a line prosecutor he worked his way up from the trenches handling misdemeanor and felony cases to handling criminal appeals. Judge Newell worked for ten years in the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office and another seven in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office before being elected to office.
In his career, Judge Newell appeared at every level of the court system, including briefing cases before the United States Supreme Court. He earned board certification in Criminal Law and Criminal Appellate law. (He now serves on the subcommittee that designs and grades the criminal appellate legal specialization exam.) He has handled every kind of criminal appeal there is, and even juvenile and CPS appeals. Moreover, he has become a sought after speaker on significant criminal law issues for organizations such as the State Bar of Texas, The Texas Center for the Judiciary, The Texas Association of Appellate Court Attorneys, The Texas District and County Attorney’s Association, and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association. He has also written articles discussing the significant cases of the day for TDCAA’s Texas Prosecutor and “In Chambers” the journal for the Texas Center for the judiciary.
During his tenure on the Court, Judge Newell has written numerous well-reasoned and thoroughly researched opinions. Though his work as a trial prosecutor taught him the human impact criminal cases can have on a community, his training and experience in criminal appeals helped him refine the ability to balance the induvial case against the large body of criminal law affecting Texas as a whole. He has won the State Bar of Texas Judicial Preference Poll as well as the Houston Bar Association Judicial Preference Poll, and he has been endorsed by every major newspaper that has interviewed him, such as the Dallas Morning News and the San Antonio Express News. He has been endorsed by law enforcement organizations such as the Houston Police Officer’s Union and the San Antonio Police Officer’s Association as well as non-partisan legal organizations such as the Houston Association of Women Attorneys, the Mexican American Bar Association of Houston, and the Houston Lawyer’s Association.
