Eagle Pass Independent School District (EPISD) Superintendent Samuel Mijares announced in an interview with the Eagle Pass Business Journal on Friday, September 11, 2020 that four teachers at Eagle Pass High School had tested positive for COVID-19 and were placed in quarantine pursuant to the Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center and Local Health Authority protocols.
Mijares noted that the four teachers had become infected with COVID-19 prior to the start of school, more than likely at their homes or outside the school district, and placed in quarantine to avoid the spread of the virus within the campus.
Mijares added that the school district had closed temporarily the wing or area where these four teachers work at Eagle Pass High School to allow the District’s Rapid Response Team the opportunity to disinfect the school.
Mijares highlighted that the District has extensive preventative measures and is collaborating with the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County Emergency Operations Center and Local Health Authority to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
Mijares pointed out that the current positivity rate of infection for COVID-19 in Maverick County is 20% and that the District has approximately 3,000 employees, so it is a statistical probability that as many as 600 employees may get infected with COVID-19 at one time or another. He added that the District has designed and developed a health and safety plan for all students, teachers, and staff against COVID-19 and the procedures to follow in the event of anyone getting infected.
Mijares encouraged all students, parents, teachers, and staff to follow the CDC Guidelines of wearing a face mask, wash hands with soap regularly, use hand sanitizer regularly, and practice social and physical distancing of six feet to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
