Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor is featured in the July 2020 issue of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine regarding his testing positive for COVID-19 in June 2020 and how the deadly virus is highly contagious and does not discriminate on who it infects.
In the article written by William Wilkerson, Villasenor details how he took every precaution against the novel coronavirus, but still became infected with the virus in early June of 2020 while preparing for the U.I.L. summer conditioning and workouts starting on June 15, 2020. Villasenor voluntarily took the COVID-19 virus test as a precautionary measure prior to the scheduled summer workouts and his test results returned positive on June 13 despite not having any symptoms of the virus.
Villasenor immediately notified the Eagle Pass Independent School District, his coaching staff, and student-athletes of his positive COVID-19 test result. The school district postponed the summer conditioning and workouts until July 6, while the Winn coaching staff took the virus test and all came out negative.
As a result of his positive test result, Villasenor had to self-quarantine from his wife, Celia, and son, Matthew, at home for three weeks until he re-tested negative.
Wilkerson quotes Villasenor stating: “It sent shockwaves through the community because it hit home, it hit close to home. I’m just grateful that none of our kids got infected or got sick, and thankful that our coaches didn’t catch it and spread it to their families; this could have spread like wildfire.”
Wilkerson also quotes Villasenor stating: “I would tell the public that this virus has no boundaries and it does not discriminate. There are guidelines in place for a reason and we need to follow these guidelines if we want to get through this. Right now, times are tough. Don’t only protect yourself but protect others; those others could travel home to the elderly. I just want to extend that to everybody to follow the guidelines and the rules that are in place.”
Wilkerson adds that Villasenor stated: “It comes down to responsibility. We all want to play sports, we need it. I think every community in the state is craving it and needs it….We as coaches need to provide that hope that we are going to have a season, and not strike fear in our kids. We’re on the front lines, there to care about them and comfort them. I just hope and pray that we can play football in 2020 and do it the right way.”
