Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks Softball Lassoed Laredo United Lady Longhorns 8-5 in 2019 Season Opener

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks Softball Team lassoed the Laredo United High School Lady Longhorns 8 to 5 in its 2019 season opener on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Student Activity Center Softball Field.
The homestanding Lady Mavericks opened the scoring in the game in the bottom of the second inning with two runs as first baseman Ariana Soto led off with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch and catcher Briana Soto slammed a double with one out to score her sister Ariana Soto and later scored herself on a Lady Longhorn error.
The Lady Longhorns answered back in the top of the third inning with one run of their own to narrow the score 2 to 1.
The Lady Mavericks exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning as left fielder Kiana Diaz led off with a base on ball and advanced to second base on a wild pitch, center fielder Kayla Sifuentes got on base on a Lady Longhorn error while Kiana Diaz advanced to their base and Sifuentes stole second base, shortstop Ana Lopez belted an RBI single scoring Diaz and advancing Sifuentes to third base, right fielder Martha Garcia smashed an RBI single scoring Sifuentes and advancing Lopez to third base, first baseman Ariana Soto flied out for the first out, third baseman Mia Uriegas got on base on a Lady Longhorn error and Lopez scored on the error, catcher Briana Soto smashed a double scoring Garcia, and Briana Soto scored on another Lady Longhorn error to take a commanding 8 to 2 lead.
The Lady Longhorns added four runs in the top of the sixth inning to narrow the score 8 to 5.
Lady Mavericks pitchers Angie Escamilla and Amy Flores combined to muzzle the potent Lady Longhorns hitters to preserve the win. Lady Maverick hurler Angie Escamilla earned the win while Amy Flores came in relief.
Lady Mavericks Head Softball Coach J.J. Iracheta, Jr. stated it was important to win the season opener against a strong team like Laredo United for the team to gain momentum and confidence for the season.
The 2019 Lady Mavericks varsity softball team members include Kiana Diaz, Thiana Reyes, Kayla Sifuentes, Ana Lopez, Anissa Salazar, Alexia Gutierrez, Amy Flores, Sirena Montez, Mia Uriegas, Martha Garcia, Kaytlyn Amaya, Ariana Benavidez, Briana Soto, Ariana Soto, and Angie Escamilla.
Assisting Head Coach Iracheta for the 2019 season are Assistant Coaches Corina Benavidez, Tony Martinez, Johnny Hernandez, and Fred Paniagua.
The Winn Lady Mavericks will next play at the elite Navarro Lady Panthers Invitational Tournament during February 14-16, 2019 in Seguin, Texas before returning home on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 against District nemesis Somerset Lady Bulldogs at the EPISD Student Activity Center Softball Field.
