Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Basketball Fall to Somerset Bulldogs 49-44

(PRESS RELEASE) The CC Winn Mavericks opened up District 28-5A play vs the reining UIL Final 4 playoff participant the Somerset Bulldogs led by Head Coach Bryan Penna. The CC Winn Mavericks game plan was to force the Somerset Bulldogs into tough contested 3s and to not give them anything inside. The plan worked all game long as the Winn Mavericks were able to hold them down on defense led by a defensive effort by Moe Gaytan, Eduardo Nava, & Saulo Ruiz. The Bulldogs could never get going as they had to settle for contested drives or off balance 3s for much of the game.

The Mavericks offense led by Jairo Maldonado (20 points) unfortunately couldn’t take advantage of the low scoring output by Somerset. Coach Penna designed a defense to take away Mavericks Wing player Moe Gaytan as they were constantly doubling him inside. Gaytan still managed 8 points to his credit. Down by 1 & then down by 3 late in the 4th quarter the Mavericks had several opportunities to tie or win the game, but unfortunately the shots would not fall. Angel Huerta scored 5 points for the Mavericks and Diego Rodriguez contributed with 4 points on his own.

The CC Winn Mavericks this week will take on the Floresville Tigers at Floresville on Tuesday and the Southside Cardinals on Friday at CC Winn Gymnasium. We would like to take this opportunity to invite the entire community of Eagle Pass to attend our game on Friday at 6:30 pm. Go Mavericks!
