Eagle Pass Seeks Transportation Support
(Press Release) (Eagle Pass, TX – May 11, 2018) State Representative Poncho Nevarez met with a delegation of local officials on Friday, May 11, 2018, at IBC Bank to discuss transportation priorities for Eagle Pass and the region. The delegation included: Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu, Mayor Pro-tem Yolanda Ramon, Maverick County Judge David Saucedo, members of the Eagle Pass Business & Economic Development Committee (BEDC), Middle Rio Grande Development Council, and Maverick County Economic Development Corporation.
Mayor English-Cantu thanked Representative Nevarez for his commitment to help Eagle Pass and the region as the city seeks increased funding from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the development of a regional transportation corridor plan to support economic development, improve traveler safety, and reduce traffic congestion.
The City of Eagle Pass, through its BEDC, began its organized transportation advocacy by participating in TEX-21 (Transportation for Excellence of the 21st Century), hosting TxDOT Chief Engineer Bill Hale in November, conducting the Regional Economic Development Forum with Congressman Will Hurd in January, hosting TxDOT Chief Project Strategist Lauren Garduno for a transportation workshop in February, and meeting with Texas Transportation Commission Chairman Bruce Brugg, Jr. in late March.
“I am encouraged that Representative Nevarez pledged his support to help our community get much-needed funding that will further develop economic growth in Eagle Pass and the region,” says Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu.
The next legislative session will begin on January 8, 2019, and communities throughout the state have been preparing to get a share of the state’s 217 billion budget. Mayor English-Cantu and Mayor Pro-tem Yolanda Ramon pledged to continue a collaborative approach and work alongside Representative Nevarez to seek the state’s support for targeted transportation and infrastructure projects.
BEDC Chairman Morris Libson also stated, “the private sector will work with all government leaders through a spirt of community to improve economic conditions of Eagle Pass and the region, and we agree with Representative Nevarez and Mayor English-Cantu that we must be united in our efforts.”
