The Houston Astros Foundation and Minute Maid announced that two Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks student-athletes, MaryChelo Flores and Erick Lopez, have been named recipients of the 2017 Minute Maid Grand Slam for Youth Scholarship. Both Flores and Lopez will receive a $5,000 scholarship from Minute Maid and the Houston Astros Foundation to assist them with their first-year college expenses.
MaryChelo Flores played four years of softball and cheerleading with the C. C. Winn Mavericks and earned District 29-5A Second Team All-District Softball honors as an infielder while also sharing the pitching duties for the Lady Mavericks. MaryChelo will be attending Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas during the Fall of 2017 where she plans to try out as a walk-on for the Texas State Lady Bobcats Softball Program.
Erick Lopez played varsity baseball for the Mavericks as an outfielder and was named to the 2017 District 29-5A Honorable Mention Baseball Team. Erick plans to attend Texas A & M University at College Station during the Fall of 2017.
According to the Houston Astros Foundation, this is the first time in over 10 years that two scholarship recipients are from the same school and/or city. Flores and Lopez have represented their Alma Mater, C.C. Winn High School, and Eagle Pass very well in being selected for this prestigious scholarship.
Flores and Lopez will be recognized as 2017 Minute Maid Grand Slam for Youth Scholarship Recipients at a reception and pre-game on-field presentation at the Houston Astros game with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, June 17, 2017.
The Eagle Pass Business Journal congratulates MaryChelo Flores and Erick Lopez on their Minute Maid Grand Slam for Youth Scholarships and wishes them the best in their future college endeavors. Go Mavericks! Go Houston Astros!
