Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Carlos Tijerina and Mariano Hernandez Qualify for State Track & Field Meet

Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks Track and Field Athletes Carlos Tijerina and Mariano Hernandez have qualified for the 2017 Texas U. I. L. Class 5A State Track and Field Meet at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin by placing Second Place each in their respective event at the Region IV Meet during April 28-29, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas, announced Eric Villasenor, C. C. Winn High School Athletic Administrator.

Standout Maverick Football player Carlos Tijerina, 2016 District 29-5A Most Valuable Football Player, hurled a throw of 162 Feet and 8 inches in the Discus to earn second place at the Regional Track and Field Meet to garner a berth in the State Track and Field Meet during May 11-13, 2017.  Earlier this year at the 2017 District 29-5A/District 30-5A Area Track and Field Meet in Corpus Christi, Texas on April 20th, Tijerina threw a new city record in the Discus throw with an outstanding 174 Feet and 3 1/2 Inches effort, almost 12 inches more than his Regional Meet effort.  Tijerina is among the Top 10 Discus Throwers in Texas among 5A schools in 2017.

Similarly, standout Maverick Football player Mariano Hernandez won Second Place in the 400 Meter Run at the Regional Track and Field Meet with an impressive 49.28 seconds on April 29th to qualify for the 2017 State Track and Field Championships.  During the preliminaries, Hernandez ran a blazing 49.03 seconds to set a new C. C. Winn High School Record in the 400 Meter Run, placing him among the top 400 Meter runners in Texas.

Both Tijerina and Hernandez are under the tutelage of Winn Mavericks Head Track and Field Coach Apolinar Garza.  Head Coach Garza is assisted by Winn Girls Head Track and Field Coach Sara June Gonzalez and Assistant Coaches Patty Pete Rodrigues, Yvette Mejia, Rey Jimenez, Roger Riojas, Erika Rodriguez, Rene Ramirez, Domingo Lopez, and Luis Sanchez.
