Del Rio Border Patrol Sector Chief Swears in 17 New Agents

DEL RIO, Texas – The Del Rio Sector’s Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz administered the Oath of Office to 17 new agents Monday morning.
“The Oath of Office, our oath, is something that I personally take very seriously,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz during his welcoming remarks to the group. “It’s a promise that you have made to your country, your families, and to yourselves, and it will be the foundation upon which you will build your careers.”
Seventeen Border Patrol agent trainees were sworn in, becoming Del Rio Sector’s largest single group of new agents in several years. After orientation, the class will travel to the United States Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. There they will spend the next six months undergoing one of the most rigorous law enforcement training programs in the country. In order to graduate from the Academy, each agent trainee must successfully complete a course of instruction in U.S. law, Border Patrol operations, physical training, firearms instruction, driving, and Spanish.
After graduation, the trainee agents report for duty at their respective stations where they will be assigned to a field-training unit for 12 weeks under the guidance of journeyman agents, and attend weekly post-academy training to complete their first year of training.
