The GEO Group, Inc. opened its latest detention center for business known as the Eagle Pass Detention Center, formerly the Maverick County Detention Center, located on Texas F.M. 131 at the Maverick County Industrial Park (Radar Base) about 12 miles north of Eagle Pass, Texas on Wednesday, September 19, 2018.
Maverick County Judge David Saucedo reported that the newly opened Eagle Pass Detention Center-GEO received its first 150 inmates on September 19th from the State of Idaho and that the new GEO Detention Center has capacity for approximately 600 inmates.
County Judge Saucedo stated that 140 Maverick Countians are employed at the newly opened GEO Detention Center at the Radar Base and GEO has made a significant investment in renovating and opening the former Maverick County Detention Center after purchasing it from a group of Bondholders about three years ago.
Maverick County formerly operated the detention center for U.S. Marshal pre-trial inmates awaiting trial in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, Del Rio Division, in Del Rio, Texas before being closed down.
Maverick County through a non-profit corporation, Maverick County Public Facilities Corporation, built the 600 beds plus detention center financed by the issuance of bonds for the amount of approximately $43 million.
The newly renovated and opened Eagle Pass Detention Center-GEO will benefit Maverick County by providing jobs to citizens and paying ad valorem taxes to local tax entities such as Maverick County and the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
