Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks Host Eagle Pass Eagles in 13th Annual City Football Championship

The thundering Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Mavericks host cross-town rival Eagle Pass High School Eagles in the 13th Annual City Football Championship on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Both the Mavericks and Eagles enter this annual football game with identical 2-0 records in the 2018 Season. The host Mavericks have defeated the Crystal City Javelinas 21-0 and Uvalde Coyotes 21-20 while the visiting Eagles have defeated the Uvalde Coyotes 42-14 and San Antonio Southwest Dragons 16-14.
The Winn Mavericks under the direction of Head Coach Eric Villasenor will feature a balanced thunder and lightning offense led by quarterback Ethan Johnston, running backs Marc Cardenas and Fernando Zapata, wide receivers Jose Blanco, Jaredo Roiz, Ernesto Vazquez, and Raul Solis, offensive linemen Danile Ruiz, Adrian Munoz, Juan Guerra, Cesar Valdez, and Jaime Rodriguez, placekicker Ernesto Fuentes, and punter Emmanuel Oviedo.
On defense, the Mavericks will feature a stampeding defense composed of linebackers Alex Chris Garcia, Patricio Hernandez, and , defensive linemen Alexis Ontiveros, Guillermo Beltran, Jose Hinojosa, and Ricardo Morales, and defensive backs Domingo Duran, Azael Rodriguez, Hector Nunez, German Velasquez, and Gilberto Vazquez.
The Eagle Pass Eagles under the tutelage of Head Coach Tom Gonzalez will feature an offense called “War Eagle” led by signal caller Ritchie Luna, running backs Saul Peralez and J. Herrera, wide receivers Rey Mendoza, Oscar Castillon, Eric Jimenez, and Isaac Gonzalez, offensive linemen Jose Laguna, Rey Galindo, Jorge Guerrero, Tito Villarreal, and Alex Martinez, and placekicker David Lopez.
On defense, the Eagles will feature a defense called “Land Sharks” composed of linebackers David Kypuros, Roger Ulloa, Jacob Jimenez, defensive linemen David Santos, Manny Rodriguez, Martin Rodriguez, and Andres Conde, and defensive backs Ryan Chisum, Nicanor Moyeda, Raul Lechler, Joshua Moncivais, and Eric Heredia.
The Mavericks will seek to earn their first victory over the Eagles in this historic and fabled series. The Eagles are 12-0 in the series, but both teams do not take this key game for granted as they will be well-prepared and coached respectively. The game promises to be highly competitive and entertaining as both teams look forward annually to this game and giving their best efforts on and off the field.
Although the Eagle Pass Independent School District does not refer to the annual rivalry game between the Winn Mavericks and Eagle Pass Eagles as the “City Football Championship,” the students, athletes, parents, fans and the community do view and refer to the game as the “City Football Championship” with the winner earning the bragging rights for a whole year. Unquestionably, the Mavericks and Eagles football game is the largest attended each year with crowds reaching between 6,000-8,000 people and is the most anticipated and popular in the community throughout the year. Some local football aficionados affectionately refer to this annual football game matchup as the “Menudo Bowl” as well as other names. Whatever you may want to call it, the annual football game between the Mavericks and Eagles is the best amateur student-athlete competition in the community.
