Judy Canales Announces U.S. Congressional Campaign For Texas’ 23rd District
Judy Canales of Eagle Pass announces she will run to represent the people of Southwest and far West Texas in the U.S. Congress’ 23rd District. The district is currently represented by Will Hurd, (R) of Helotes.
Ms. Canales said, “I am running to represent the people of the 23rd congressional district because our future is at stake. Too many of our friends, family, and neighbors are running out of hope for the future and they want a change. I’m prepared to represent the people of the 23rd district and fight for our future in Congress because I understand our people and our land. They want investment and results not hypocrisy and politics as usual. ”
Ms. Canales is looking forward to launching a listening tour throughout the 23rd district. Congressional District 23 in Texas is one of the country’s largest congressional districts. It runs along the majority of the Texas state border and is predominantly rural. It stretches from western San Antonio to just outside of El Paso.
Ms. Canales has a proven record of leadership, working to develop the Texas economy at the local level and serving in executive leadership positions at the United States Department of Agriculture in both President Obama’s and Clinton’s administrations.
Ms. Canales is an adjunct faculty member for Southwest Texas Junior College.
Most recently, she served as State Executive Director for the Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA), where she was the first woman to lead the agency, and provided leadership over all aspects of federal farm program delivery for an agency that employs nearly 1,400 people and invested over $7.5 billion dollars over three and one-half years in Farm Bill programs delivered throughout Texas for farmers, ranchers, women producers, youth and veterans in agriculture and worked with underserved communities throughout Texas and on the Texas-Mexico border.
Canales previously served as Acting Deputy Under Secretary for USDA Rural Development. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Canales as Administrator for the Rural Business-Cooperative Service at USDA Rural Development.
Before her Presidential appointment in 2009, Ms. Canales served as Executive Director of the Maverick County Development Corporation in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Canales received a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government. She received a Master of Arts degree in Urban Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio, a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin and an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Texas Junior College. Canales is a native of Uvalde, Texas and lives with her husband, Juan Antonio Tovar Jr, a public-school teacher and coach, in Eagle Pass, Texas.
