Maverick County honored former Eagle Passans Alex and Lily Alvarez, whom both passed away in a tragic auto accident with a driver that was driving and texting, on Friday, May 26, 2017 by dedicating the softball field at the Nick Carr Sports Complex in the name of softball enthusiast Alex Alvarez.
Over 50 Maverick County public officials, family, friends, and sports enthusiasts attended the beautiful dedication ceremony hosted by Maverick County Commissioner Precinct 4 Roberto Ruiz and Maverick County Parks and Recreation Director Jose Ramos.
The Alex Alvarez Softball Field dedication ceremony occurred exactly on the fifth anniversary of the passing of Alex Alvarez and his wife, Liliana Valdez de Alvarez, as well as Liliana’s mother, Olga Valdez. The lone survivor of that tragic auto accident, Alex Alvarez, Jr., threw the honorary first pitch of the dedication ceremony in memory of his parents and grandmother.
Hector Alvarez, father of Alex Alvarez, thanked Maverick County, County Judge David R. Saucedo, County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz, Sheriff Tom Schmerber, Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu, and everyone present at the dedication ceremony for their love and support of his son and daughter-in-law. Hector Alvarez eloquently spoke of his son’s love of softball and sports during his life, including his sponsorship and play with the softball team known as the “Black Stallions.”
Hector Alvarez noted that the family has established a safety awareness campaign against driving and texting in memory of his son and daughter-in-law that has been well-received in the community and area.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber stated that Sheriff Department vehicles will sport a “Don’t Text & Drive” decal together with Alex’s favorite jersey number 12 in the immediate future.
Dr. Hector Alvarez, Alex’s brother and local dentist, also spoke at the dedication ceremony and thanked everyone who contributed and made possible this wonderful dedication ceremony in honor of his brother and sister-in-law. Dr. Alvarez noted that the family has drawn strength from their faith in God and continuing to create community awareness on the extreme dangers of “texting while driving.” Dr. Alvarez stated little Alex Alvarez, Jr. brings the family many joys and memories of how his brother, Alex, loved life and lived it to its fullest potential.
County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz noted the importance of softball and sports in every community and how the late Alex Alvarez was a frequent player at the softball field now being dedicated in his memory.
A beautiful white marble monument with the words “In Loving Memory of Alex and Lily Alvarez” was unveiled at the dedication ceremony that will permanently honor and recognize both Alex and Lily Alvarez’s significant contribution to softball and Maverick County.
