Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber announced the use of body cameras by Maverick County Deputy Sheriffs during patrol of the county starting on Monday, March 13, 2017, at a press conference held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Tom Bowles Detention Center.
Sheriff Schmerber stated that the body cameras were acquired through a State of Texas grant with a 25 percent contribution by Maverick County. Sheriff Schmerber added that the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department acquired these body cameras since the summer of 2016, but had not used them due to extensive training required by every Deputy Sheriff before using them. Schmerber noted that the use of body cameras to be worn on the front of the Deputy Sheriffs uniform shirt will assist in the efficient investigation of cases and improve evidentiary documentation of cases needed to be prosecuted.
293rd Judicial District Attorney Roberto Serna was also present at the press conference and stated that the use of body cameras by Maverick County Sheriff Department Deputies will enhance the quality of investigations and evidence gathering for criminal cases to be prosecuted by his office.
Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo also attended the press conference and congratulated Sheriff Schmerber and the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department on the acquisition of the body cameras, training on use of the cameras, and implementation of the latest technology to better serve the citizens of Maverick County.
