The City of Eagle Pass, Texas City Council unanimously approved a Resolution in opposition of President Trump’s January 25, 2017 Executive Order to build a border wall on the United States-Mexico Border at its February 2, 2017 regular meeting.
Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu stated that many U.S.-Mexico border communities are approving resolutions in opposition to President Trump’s Border Wall Executive Order. Mayor Cantu stated that the proposed Border Wall will not assist keeping the United States any safer than it already is and that there are better alternatives available such as increased implementation of technology, increased manpower, and investment in border communities.
Mayor Cantu noted that the current border wall cost $4-6 Million per mile when constructed by President George W. Bush. Cantu pointed that there are approximately two miles of border wall in Eagle Pass and that this money would have been better used if it had been invested in modernizing and expanding the Eagle Pass Port of Entry.
Mayor Cantu acknowledged that the City of Eagle Pass is working with Congressmen Henry Cuellar of Laredo, Texas and Will Hurd of San Antonio, Texas in persuading President Trump that his proposed border wall is not necessary and a waste of taxpayers money and that there are better, cost effective alternatives available.
